Algal Omega3to1® is a high-omega-3 algal oil made from schizochytrium algae, with a minimum of 480mg of DHA & EPA in a 3:1 ratio, aimed to replace fish oil. The algae are fermented, harvested and extracted to yield an oil that is consequently winterized and refined.
This product is used as an input for our Vegan Soft Gels and liquid formulations.
We recognize that there only a few suppliers in plant-based EPA &DHA and the need for EPA is strong. One of the ways to get higher EPA is to make concentrates, as is regularly done with fish oils. We have indeed seen an increase of algal concentrates on the market. These are made using different enzymatic, chemical and distillation processes that alter the molecule structure (so called sn-positions) no longer making it natural and at the same time decreasing overall bioavailability.
We have, therefore, chosen to stick by what we believe in, which are fully natural oils like Algal Omega3to1®.
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) & Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are long chain omega 3 fatty acids with bioactive functionalities.
DHA is mostly recognized for its role in brain tissue, please read more here. EPA has been shown to convert to eicosanoids, hormone-like molecules that can help reduce inflammation. EPA is believed to help improve heart health, joint health and mood. There are multiple allowed health claims around omega-3 to help position your product for a specific target group.

In algal oil there is 480mg/g of EPA & DHA, whereas in the most common fish oil (anchovy) this is 280mg/g. Anchovy has about 3% oil. So to create 1 kg of 280mg EPA & DHA you need 33kg of fish. To then get to 480mg you take a factor of 480/280 = 1,7. 33kg x 1,7 = 56kg of fish.
This stand for Total Oxidation Value which is measured by 2 x peroxide value and 1 x para-anasidine value.

As algae are grown in a closed environment, no pollutants get into the product. The oil is safe and is only refined lightly to remove oxidation products.
The algae, schizochytrium, are grown in fermentation vessels until maturity. Once a batch is done, it is treated with enzymes to release the oil which is then separated and lightly refined until put in their final container.
